You have finally come to the conclusion that you need or want a sewing machine. Now, what is on the market and how do you make the right decision?

There are many brands of machines out there and everyone boasts different features. Some machines appeal to quilters, others want you to embroider everything including the toilet seat and the shower curtain. Searching for the right machine is going to take some time.

Introduction:

This tutorial assumes that you know how to safely operate your power tools. Always refer to the manufacturer instructions if you are unsure how to use your tools.

Any wood worker needs to take a board from the lumber yard or their local sawyer and make this board a uniform thickness, length and width. This board needs to have all four edges square to each other. This is referred to a milling a board four square and is a pre-requisite to any wood working project.

A few weeks ago I wrote a column on how to choose your sewing machine. If you have made your choice, we will continue on with getting your machine ready to sew.

Threading the machine is something that is pretty basic, yet a little different on every machine. It is VERY important to refer to your manual when first learning the procedure. If the threading isn't correct, nothing else will work either.

Here is a basic rundown of threading a sewing machine. Remember, each machine is different. This is just the general idea.

General

Lumber is available in 2 main categories, hardwood and softwood. Quite simply, hardwood is harvested from any deciduous (leaf bearing) tree. While softwood is from coniferous or needle producing trees. However a wood worker also needs to decide if an engineered wood product like plywood is better suited for the job.

We will demystify the these 3 classifications by taking a close look at the 3 main choices a wood worker has to face when buying project wood.

In high school, learning a new recipe (especially dessert
recipes) was always my favorite part of a foreign language
and culture class. One day during German in my sophomore
year, I teamed up with two other classmates to make German
Crumble Cake from a magazine. It was quite good, if I do
say so myself. Seven years later, it continues to be one of
my favorite desserts to bake.

Handling this German dessert recipe is a real 'hands on'
experience, as you'll see. And like other German desserts,
it contains a hefty bit of butter. But it's worth it. Enjoy!

There are a number of things that every wood worker needs to
know when they are working with power tools (to a lessor
extent, hand tools). Some things are plainly obvious but
others are often overlooked.

On the serious side, planning ahead may be what save your
life. Some of the power tools available are very powerful
and often rotate at extremely high speeds. Hard carbide has
very little trouble with soft flesh. I have worked in remote
areas where it was several hours to the hospital and safety
was an absolute priority.

Make Cafe Curtains
send this project to a friend!
These cafe curtains are simple, inexpensive and take almost no time at all.
A lovely way to dress up any kitchen window!
MEASURING INSTRUCTIONS:

1. First measure your window height. Cafe curtains can cover anywhere from 1/3 to 1/2 of your window. If you want to cover the bottom window casing, include that in your measurement.

2. Measure your window width and include the casing if that is your choice. Your fullness should be twice to three times the measurement. If your fabric is home dec. fabric-it is heavier and maybe twice the fullness is fine. If you are sewing sheers then three times the fullness is what you want.

This is a super quick easy sewing idea for a last minute Mother's Day gift. It will take about 10 minutes and even the youngest seamstress can make one of these up in no time. A very nice gift too!

The satin should be polyester satin (totally washable and throw in the dryer). The satin is smooth, and for those who love to have their hair done, this will allow you to keep the style a little longer. The satin does not ruffle or fight against the "do."

Coping with wood movement

All wood workers need to be aware of wood movement when building furniture projects. Failure to consider this important factor can cause wood panels to crack or split.

My high school biology teacher compared the structure of a piece of wood with a bundle of straws. The straws represent the cells and capillaries of the wood. When a tree is growing water and food are transferred up through the cells and are carried throughout the tree.

Lavender & Tourists Appear

April 24th 2004

This week we have made the garden ready for the busy tourist season, with just a few minor jobs, such as the new Lemon tree, left to go. La Doccia is full now for the first time this year. While every day this week I came back from my language course in Florence, arrived at La Doccia and found my Father pottering around with another car load of new plants from the Vivaio at Rosano.

It's easy to give your home a country accent with mug rugs. These little 9-patch coasters are just the thing next time neighbors drop by for coffee.

Two inch squares of light and dark fabrics are all you need for the top. Three squares across and three rows down. Sew the rows together alternating colours. Cut a piece of batting and a co-ordinating backing the same size as the top.

Layer with batting on bottom, backing right side up and top wrong side up. Stitch around entire outside edge leaving an opening to turn. Turn right side out and gently poke out your corners. Then stitch opening closed.
